SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, an encrypted protocol strong enough to transmit credit card numbers and other confidential data. An SSL Certificate is a publicly registered document that proves that you are the company you say you are, to prevent forged SSL connections to other computers. An SSL certificate is required for Paypal Website Payments Pro or a Designtion shopping cart. Most browsers will also generate a warning when connecting to a site without an SSL certificate or with an invalid one. Like domains, SSL Certificates must be renewed each year.
